| Description: | Built-like-a-tank, classic-looking tube integrated amp from Cayin. The 688R integrated is a true dual mono design, with a potted toroidal power supply and potted output transformer for EACH channel. This 78lb. beast is the more rare bigger brother to the well reviewed but less powerful Cayin A-88T integrated, and that thing is no wimp.
This unit is designed after the legendary Marantz 8B amp and matching preamp. Wonderfully musical sound, classic circuit design and handsome appearance. Tone controls for bass and treble so you can suit to taste if you wish. This is a music lovers piece, not that it doesn't do the hi-fi thing but to me its musical message appeals to the heart more than the analytical mind, if you want that then look elsewhere. At first gaze, do you see the forest or a bunch of trees? The answer will tell you where you stand.
The unit has Pre-in connections so you can use it with a preamp if needed, so the unit can grow with you if you feel the need to experiment. This is one of my favorite pieces, one I never thought I'd part with and I know I will regret having sold it soon as it leaves my house. You could wait a year, probably more and never see another one of these on the used market. Cayin is fast becoming a serious player in audio and as time and stellar reviews pile up people are starting to realize that. This is going to be a nice rare bird to own for sure, everybody has an A88T and the lesser amps but this one is a more prized commodity. I get the feeling Cayin isn't making them like this anymore, just my opinion. Mods were done by Parts Connexion, including noble pot mod and auricaps installed. The remote's function is now only for Muting due to the modifications. This increased the sound quality in terms of better clarity and 3-D soundstaging of the unit at the expense of some convenience. The unit is also auto biasing. I will also include the stock tubes for you as spares, the unit currently has electro harmonic EL34's in right now. I have barely used the unit in the last 6-8 months and instead of being a collector decided to give it a new home for someone to enjoy on a daily basis.
The 688R is loaded with eight EL34 output tubes used for Class A amplification. Output impedance is selectable, with 2, 4 and 8 ohm taps, allowing you to fine-tune your speakers. It's also switchable between Ultralinear and Triode output modes. A preamp input allows the 688R to function solely as a power amp if that's what you desire. Otherwise, four 12AX7s and two 6N6s are used in the built-in preamplifier. And the faceplate includes tone controls for both treble and bass, a novelty in today's audiophile world.
The 688R includes quality point-to-point wiring with premium capacitors and resistors. The unit is remote-controlled and comes with a detachable IEC-type power cord.
