Gordon Rankin’s design is that of a genius and probably there are a handful of them that have been built. At a price of $25K (these are the silver edition) not everyone is fortunate enough to buy them and some have been more fortunate to own them. Hearing them has been an opportunity for others as it does set the benchmark level to attain.
You will probably NEVER see these amplifiers ever again on sale on Agon, as people who do have them never move away from them. The only reason I am selling them is that I have just moved house and the new place does not have a room large enough for my horns. I have to get a new system (amp and speakers) and hence I cannot have so much of my hifi asset tied up in components that I may ‘hope’ to use in the next decade or even distant future.
I have had these amps since the last five years in a pet and smoke free environment and they are in a condition as I would describe a 8/10 simply due to their age. The beautiful walnut and cherry wood has been looked after extremely well and have the minimum amount of any indentation.
What more can I say about these amps that has not been said by audio reviewers.

So why the ULTIMATE AMPLIFICATION? Well to complete the quest towards that goal, these mono-blocks come IMHO the best vibration free platforms-Silent Running Audio’s top of range Ohio Class Plus Square custom made for the Napoleon’s. They are in a gorgeous black mirror finish and the above pictures will speak for themselves. As these are custom made (and nothing custom comes cheap!) they set me back a cool $6K!
These silver mono-blocks have Yamamoto’s Gold (top of line) tube sockets placed in them. They also have Aeon’s and a set of Auri T-Caps new (Teflon) capacitors in them. These have taken them to the most realistic presentation in sound quality. I also have the original Hovland caps which will come with the amp.
Well it surely can’t end there. These amps would also come with the top range of tubes, that I have tried and tested with the best out there over the last few decades.
Input Tube: - Amperex 12AU7 D-Foil Getter, White Label- PQ (premium quality) made in the Herleen factory in the mid-50’s. These today are close to unobtainable and very pricey.
They will also come with brand new 6S4A’s (input tube) and Mullard’s GZ37’s (rectifier).
For the Power tube the best Sophia’s 300B TJ Princess Carbon Plate run very cool and are so ahead of the Western Electric’s.
All the tubes above also have tube dampers. The rectifier and the 300B tube have double sets each. They come with cone coasters to sit on the SRA shelf.
I do not want to write an epic on the sound quality and shall describe it in the most comprehensive way. IT is not ‘Syrupy”. If you want syrupy go else where, there are plenty of SET’s that can colour your day in that manner. And I have heard some high end manufacturers that for me fall into this category!
They are the most neutral 300b’s that have come along and do not exhibit any characteristics signatures of the tube. I suppose this is the marvel of Gordon’s design, as it is dead quiet too. The music flows and with a digital front end, you will swear that it makes the sound move in the most natural (analog?) direction.
The bass is incredibly tight and with the SRA’s shelves they do deeeep bottom end tunefully (musical)!
The mid is palpable if the recording exudes it and one has to know that nothing does mid like a 300B SET! Immense texture and three dimension capabilities that just hold firm into a soundstage that defies wall boundaries in your room.
The top end is very highly detailed and one feels that the notes never stop playing as they keep continuing on and on. Sometimes digital surprises me in the amount of information it carries and the Napoleon’s just makes sure that nothing is held back.
What type of speakers will it drive? Well I have driven them with horns and have heard them on a variety of single drivers to 3 ways from 92 db upwards. And in all scenario’s they have the ability to shake the room! Below is a link that will show you what is best suited to match with them.

I will not separate any of the components, as I have worked too hard to bring this amp up to such a stunning performance level.
These AMPS are presently on a 220V-240V setting, but I am sure that these could be adjusted to the 100-110V setting internally.
We are talking about a retail price level of $33K+ going close to half it’s value. I know I will kick myself for going through with this.
The amps will be professionally packed (I don’t have the original packaging) and buyer will pay for actual shipping from Sydney, Australia. You are looking at a combined shipping weight of about 40-45kgs or 85-90lbs. I will only use reliable shipper such as Fedex, DHL or freight forwarders such as Bax Global.
Buyer option to insure and I would highly recommend it. I am flexible for declared value due to import duties.
